Attendees will get to experience a new approach to engaging elementary and middle students in science investigation skills using VR. BrainPOP has built a VR experience using the CoSpacesEDU platform that allows middle school students to engage in evidence gathering and scientific argumentation through a hybrid online and offline group experience. In this workshop, we’ll describe what we’re trying to do, then jump right into a sample lesson/activity featuring this new approach to VR. Participants will be given an open-ended question to investigate, and then enter the VR experience (using a free app on their phones and Google Cardboards that we will provide). Next they will turn to each other in groups and discuss their findings, sharing evidence and forming hypotheses. They will then enter the experience a second time to test those hypotheses. Finally they will discuss one last time and reach an answer as a group. We hope this active experience in a very accessible VR activity will prompt a lively discussion about this different way to use VR, whether and how it is accessible in the average classroom, and how it could be designed for even better science learning.
