Learning to code has been trending as the new, "must have" skill for learners, but most of the available course offerings do not connect coding to real world applications--- and those that do often stop short of practical, tactical business methods present in a professional design/development environment. EXCALIBUR is an authentic learning scenario wherein students participate in the entire process of creating a video game starting with pitching an idea and culminating with branding, marketing and selling the product. A Scrum (Agile) framework allows learners to collaborate to decide on the most effective and efficient ways to complete work. The students are presented with scaffolded challenges, while examining their options and identifying an affinity for some aspect of the design/development process. A selection of software tools are introduced, but it is left to the student to determine how best to proceed. FAILURE will be honored as an essential aspect of the iterative procedure, in order to establish a climate which supports student authority and agency, lending students voice and often, choice, in how and what they learn.
